There were invited Spoken Word artists, musical performers, storytellers, and much more! Council Member Darlene Mealy was in attendance. We invited several children’s authors and illustrators to read their books. TO COMMEMORATE THE LIFE OF JOHN LEWIS STEPTOE we celebrated the John Lewis Steptoe Street Co-Naming and the forthcoming Nationwide Tour of the play Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. The street co-naming ceremony started at 12:00 pm. THIS MILESTONE EVENT was August 27th, 2016 from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm. We have worked passionately for this day to come and greatly appreciate your generosity in making this celebration a memorable one for everyone. JOHN LEWIS STEPTOE PLACE STREET CO-NAMING CELEBRATION We are grateful for your support, as a sponsor of this historical event. We've brought his name home to Monroe Street! The Steptoe Family appreciates all your support. He was raised right here on Monroe Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. JOHN LEWIS STEPTOE, CREATOR OF AWARD-WINNING CHILDREN’S BOOKS, was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 14, 1950. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration was held on August 27th, on Monroe Street between Ralph and Howard Avenues. On July 14, 2016, the legistrators voted and approved the co-naming of Monroe Street to John Lewis Steptoe Place.
